Position Description:

Data Network Engineer:

The role of the Data Network Engineer is to provide technical design and implementation services to support the evolution and ongoing support of the IP Network in response to projects (all types), upgrades, service and feature enhancements and for remediation/break-fix services. The work is always in alignment to the current and approved architectural, roadmaps, technology standards and templates, governance and change management policies set forth by the firm.

The technology areas of focus for the role includes, Data Center and End User networks, public and private transport systems, WAN, Optical systems and emerging technologies such as Switched-Ethernet, LTE, (etc.), Corporate/Branch and Building Networking including Wireless LAN. Knowledge in related technology areas such as Voice and Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions and Network Transport Services is required. Network Appliance, Video and Unified Communications knowledge are important.

This role also provides senior networking technical support to other stakeholders including problem and incident support to Network Operations. An understanding of the role of Operations; troubleshooting practices and the use of proactive and reactive tools is important to the Data Network Engineer’s role. They must be mindful of how their role impacts the firm’s business and reputation. Concepts such as driving value, always delivering quality and understanding how their work impacts service resiliency (C&R) are important.

This role is part of a global solutions and service delivery organization. This position will interface directly with internal and external customers/suppliers/providers; architecture, product engineering, product management, finance and business management and operations teams. At times, they may interface with various levels of senior management. Strong written, verbal and presentation skills are a must. The candidate must be able to work on their own and successfully in team settings in various sizes and locations. Adherence and use of standards, product sets, templates, systems and artifacts are important to the success of the engineer, the department and the firm at large. The Data Network Engineer will be considered a subject matter expert in their field and is expected to stay current with various technologies, organizational goals and industry trends to drive end to end value.

Key Responsibilities:

• Must have the clear ability to translate business requirements into creditable, high quality and resilient designs based upon the firm’s roadmaps and standards. Must understand that their work will not be considered complete until it is successfully accepted into production and is fully monitored and supported by Network Operations.
• The Network Engineer conducts technology assessments. Focuses on managing the design and implementation of new technology solutions. Provides design and detailed consulting as network subject matter expert. Deliver design proposals/budget and scopes for all requests. Works with the Architecture and Product Engineering teams to develop, review, communicate, and revise network standards. Performs large scale network planning; plans, designs and network projects via technical processes, standards and governance as they relate to network engineering activities.
• Candidate must display knowledge in network sizing, QOS, NAC, CAC and COS traffic classifications. Must have the ability to provide bandwidth requirement calculations.
• Technical areas of focus include but are not limited to WAN/MAN, Routing, Switching, Firewalls, Load Balancers, LAN, TCP/IP, DNS, UDP, Latency, NAC, QoS, CAC, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, Multicast, NHRP, ATM, PPP, IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, ACL, VNP, Building Wireless/Wi-Fi solutions (802.xx) and carrier “in-building wireless services (DAS) etc. Knowledge of Cable Systems a plus.
• Must have a strong knowledge of Network Security design.
• Must adhere to design standards and global design authority processes and procedures; computer skills and the use of various applications such as MS Office, MS Visio are required.
• The ability to assemble professional documents based on existing templates, ability to provide accurate work descriptions with needed hours for completion, assumptions and caveats. Must understand project delivery lifecycle management, the concept of a Detailed Design, Test and Certification methodologies, Back-Out and Validation plans and procedures.
• Plays a key role in project delivery lifecycle management focusing on creating Detailed Implementation Plans for all design, Test and Accept criteria, Back-Out and Validation plans and procedures. Adheres to Project Close-Out practices such as asset tracking, inventories, chargeback, documentation and the related systems, tools and process updates.
• The Data Network Engineer supports initiatives as they transition between design, implementation and operations. They are active in all phases as an SME to support, solve program and facilitates decision making. The goal is to help the orderly and timely execution of projects and initiatives in an optimal, strategic and low risk way.
• Role performs Q/A function prior to every implementation project. Reviews a design and understands how it is based upon standards and how it matches to the “commission” details (installation, turn-up). Any questions must be review with the Design Engineer.

• At times, the candidate may take part in service and business management activities related to budgeting, RFI/RFP, service planning, etc.
• Must have extensive knowledge and experience using (both reactively and productive) advanced tooling. It includes but is not limited to Sniffer/wire Shark, Prognosis, Scripting (Pearle), SolarWinds, HP NA/OpsWare/OpenView, etc.
• Application experience with an innovation “mind-set” and how it impacts how engineering work gets done is important. Coding and application design experience is a plus.
• Must maintain and adhere to department polices in conjunction with their service delivery function (asset tracking, inventories, chargeback, documentation any related systems/tools, processes).
• Is responsible for the quality of the service outputs of his/her work.
• The candidate must have excellent client interfacing skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with all levels of management. Candidate should have experience operating with colleagues across different time zones with a flexible approach to working hours (ability to work varied hours and weekends a must) in order to successfully interact and communicate on a global level) if needed.
• Voice/VoIP/UC and Video knowledge (understanding of VoIP/UC systems (i.e. Cisco CUCM, AVAYA Communications Manager, Microsoft LYNC and Skype for Business, etc.) is important.
• Crisis Management experience is a plus.

Position Requirements:

Critical Experiences/Education Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, related field and or technical training. Must have strong analytical skills.
• Minimum of 10 to 12 years’ experience required in Data Networking-related disciplines in design, operate and implementation services.
• Cloud or SDN knowledge and experience a must.
• Industry Certifications in CCDP, CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE are strongly preferred.
o Associated certifications JUNOS/JNCP, Arista, Cisco CCVP, and CCIP-Voice are a plus.
• Strong background in IT service delivery role (i.e. engineering support for projects).
• Experience in various equipment manufacturers including but not limited to CISCO, Juniper, Arista, Brocade, EMC, etc.
• Financial services (Insurance, Banking, Investment banking), is a plus.
• Knowledge and experience in Software and Systems Application and design (Linux, UNIX, etc.) a plus.
• Has participated in design and/or implementation of major IT projects.
• Experience in process re-engineering and work styles such as ITIL, Six Sigma, MOF/MSF, a required.

• Develops budgets, project timeline and risks, identifies project staffing requirements.
• Manage project budget and resource allocation, facilitates project service levels and timelines against client/end-user requirements. Advocate on behalf of Network Services and clients/end-users.
• Develops, tracks, reports and manages project schedules and T-minus schedules.
• The candidate must have excellent client interfacing skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with all levels of management. Candidate should have experience operating with colleagues across different time zones with a flexible approach to working hours (ability to work varied hours and weekends a must) in order to successfully interact and communicate on a global level) if needed.
• Crisis Management experience is a plus.
