Consider T5 Lighting Articleposted: November 14, 2009, 12:52 PM

Consider T5 Lighting There are several different reasons why you should consider T5 Lighting. Perhaps you are starting a new saltwater aquarium and are looking for the proper lighting for corals, or already have a fish only aquarium and want to switch over to a reef. Whatever the reason, consider T5 Lighting as an affordable solution.
T5 High Output Fluorescent Lighting is similar to a standard fluorescent bulb, but only has the width of a dime. Unfortunately, the ballasts used for standard fluorescent tubes will not light T5 aquarium bulbs, so it is not as easy as swapping out your old bulbs for new T5 bulbs. How Does T5 Compare to Other Lighting Sources? 1. T5 Lighting is more intense than regular Normal Output Fluorescent Tubes, which are standard on most freshwater aquariums. A standard 48” fluorescent bulb uses 40 watts of electricity while a 48” T5 bulb uses 54 watts of electricity, yet the T5 produces light up to 10 times more intense than traditional fluorescents. T5 bulbs use slightly more power than fluorescents, but produce much stronger light! You may have read about watts per gallon, but that information is no longer relevant for most modern reefs. 2. T5 Lighting is more intense and more economical than Power Compact Lighting. It can be anywhere from 3-5 times more intense that Power Compact lights, and while they generally has a higher start up cost than Power Compact Lighting, it makes up for the cost in bulb replacement. In a 4 bulb T5 fixture, the bulbs need to be replaced every year with a cost of about $25 per bulb; a total expense of about $100 per year. In a 4 bulb Power Compact fixture, the bulbs need to be replaced every six months with a cost of about $25 per bulb; a total expense of $200 per year. So over a 3 year lifespan, you save $300 by using T5 Lights, which is about the cost of most new T5 fixtures. 3. T5 Lighting is more intense than VHO lighting and requires less space. T5 lighting is about 2-3 times stronger than VHO (Very High Output Lighting) and uses less electricity. VHO bulbs were previously used for actinic supplements, but T5 bulbs have reached and surpassed the quality of actinic VHO bulbs. 4. T5 Lighting can be as intense as, or more intense than Metal Halide Lighting if individual reflectors are used on the T5 bulbs. One benefit to T5 lighting over Metal Halide lighting is T5 lights produce less heat, which will lower your aquarium’s cooling expense. If for some reason you want to change the color of your aquarium, with T5 it is as easy as changing a $25 bulb, but with Metal Halide you will need to purchase a new $60-100 Metal Halide Bulb and also wait two weeks for the bulb to burn in before it produces its true color. What if you do not like the color of the new Metal Halide bulb? The primary reason to use Metal Halide is if you have an aquarium deeper than 24” or prefer the shimmering effect created by Metal Halide. Why is there a Price Difference in T5 Fixtures? 1. There are many factors that determine a fixture’s cost. The major differences are brand, ballast, light bulbs included or not included, fan cooled, independent dawn/dusk switches, moon lights and individual reflectors. High End T5 Fixtures will have more of these features, but Standard T5 Fixtures will be more than sufficient for most saltwater reef aquariums. 2. The most important feature to look for in a T5 Light Fixture is individual bulb reflectors or SLR (single light reflectors) rather than one large reflector. This will ultimately determine the intensity of the bulbs and the corals that you can keep. Can I keep Corals and Clams with T5 Lights? 1. Given your aquarium’s water parameters, you should be able to keep almost any photosynthetic coral available in the aquarium hobby. This includes soft corals, LPS corals, and most SPS corals. 2. You should be able to keep almost any 4”+ photosynthetic Tridacna Clam. This includes Maxima, Crocea, Squamosa and Derasa Clams. Beginner Micro Reef Tank Articleposted: November 7, 2009, 11:47 AM

Beginner Micro Reef Tank Have you always wanted a saltwater aquarium? But didn’t know what equipment was needed, or were too afraid to jump in? With advances in technology, small fish tanks have become more and more popular. Now you can get your hands wet without the investment in a large aquarium.
The Nano Cube and other mini reef systems are extremely popular amongst beginner hobbyists. Kits larger than 20 gallons are the best value and will be the easiest for a new hobbyist to maintain. In a 24 gallon Nano Cube, you can keep a pair of clownfish as well as one or two other small fish. Other popular additions include shrimp, snails, crabs, starfish, urchins and coral. The built in Power Compact lights are suitable for keeping most soft and LPS corals. If you are looking for more intense lighting consider the 28 Gallon Nano Cube with 150 Watt HQI Metal Halide. All of the Nano Cube Aquariums use an integrated filtration system that is discreetly hidden behind a false wall in the back of the tank. The filtration system uses surface skimming to remove oils and surface film, mechanical sponge filtration to collect detritus, chemical activated carbon filtration to trap organics and bio-balls to provide an ideal environment for beneficial bacteria to grow. Although not necessary, a popular modification is to substitute the bio-balls for rubble live rock and macroalgae to create a Refugium. Other Nano Cube features include a flip top canopy with built in cooling fans, 2 Nite-Vu LED moonlights for nighttime viewing and extra aquarium depth for simple Live Rock aquascaping. What Other Equipment is Necessary? You will need a Stand or cabinet to display your new Nano Cube Aquarium, a Hydrometer or Refractometer to measure salinity, Synthetic Salt Mix, a Thermometer, Heater and aquarium substrate, like Live Sand. You may also purchase fish and live rock from your local fish store or LiveAquaria.com. $50, Saltwater Fish Tank needs a home. Good Condition.posted: October 11, 2009, 10:40 PM

I am moving soon and I am selling the rest of my furniture. I have a saltwater fish tank or marine aquarium (glass tank with cabinet) about 3-4 feet wide and about 4 feet high. The glass tank itself is about 3-4 feet wide and 1.5 ft. long. It sits on top of a wooden cabinet which is about 3-4 feet wide and 2 feet high. I do not know exact measurements but those are my estimates. I hope that doesn't confuse you! I was not able to clean the salt out of the tank before I put it in my Storage Unit so it still has salt residue in the tank. I still have all the supplies for the tank. The selling price is negotiable.I wish I could take the fish tank with me, but unfortunately, I must sell or give it away. It is still sitting in my Storage Unit waiting for a good home. Unfortunately, I do not have photos of the tank itself but if you are still interested, please e-mail me at JBV912@yahoo.com and we can discuss where you'd like to see or pick up the fish tank. Selling price is negotiable. I will only accept CASH, sorry. No one likes frauds. :-) I need to find a good owner for this Fish Tank and also someone who loves aquarium fish!
