Kirton III in Oakland, California in July of 1973 was highly influenced in the early 90's by the success of Tupac Shakur and Shock G from Digital Underground. I'm a songwriter, play a little bass, drums, & keys. I have no guitar skills and my keyboard skills are basic so, I’m looking to collaborate with a guitar or keyboard player.
If you can do both ...great, less cooks in the kitchen. I have plenty of songs that are just missing the final ingredients but I’m also open to cooking up something new from scratch. The following points are meant to help weed out some people so as not to waste your time or mine: 1. SOUL/pop/FUNK/rock Project (note the stress on the Soul & Funk) 2. NON-PAYING gig (maybe one day, maybe not) 3. Mostly for fun & love of music (let’s see where it goes from there) 4. Small home recording studio in south Sugar Land (distance factor) 5. Collaborate only on Fri, Sat, or Sun (I have a full time job) 6. Mature 35+ preferred 7. No time wasters please Thanks. • Location: Sugar Land

REVIEW:
The BATTLE FOR TEXAS Houston Regionals - Halloween Weekend Greetings: First of all let me thank everyone that participated in The Battle for Texas. This includes all Bands, Judges, Sponsors, Special Guest performers and of course... Keith & Joyce Gilley that made the event memorable. The Gilley's name is a piece of Houston History known world-wide. After looking back and considering the event, all bands performed exceptionally well and there was not one act that was not well above average to excellent. Every act was very well prepared. I believe this is why the judges had so much fun and commented at the event that they thoroughly enjoyed the variety of music on both days. But I assure you it was a difficult task for them to choose the best of everyone. Fortunately, the judging system I utilize puts all judges in an objective place to make it as simple a task as possible rather than rely on a simple like or dislike of a music style or performance. Also note the Sunday judges were different from the Saturday "Country Music" judges and never knew the scores of the country acts from the night before. As far as judging is concerned, I will always adhere to this system of competition. No one wins a winner by applause competition except the band with the most fans present at the end of the night. This is not to say don't enter these types of events, this says enter it for reasons other than winning or be prepared to sell a lot of tickets to your fans and get into the last two spots of the night... I have already received thank you letters from several bands and I appreciate the kind words. In general the event went flawlessly from an operational point of view and I am quite pleased at how supportive all of you were to other bands. This includes members of the Damen Austin Band offering (without being asked) an amplifier cabinet to a band that needed one and members of 76 Mile Band allowing an act to borrow an acoustic guitar when their guitar was not functioning properly on Saturday night. True Pro's everyone! As we begin to expand the B4T to other cities like San Antonio or Dallas please feel free to participate anytime. You do not have to live in a city to participate there. Also, winning the competition is not always THE GOAL to participate in an event such as this. Many do it for the experience and what better way to gain a fan base in another city than to participate in an event such as this. It also connects you to clubs in other cities when you are ready to expand beyond Houston. Remember, the winner of our last event came in from Lake Charles, LA. She was a 16 year old singer/songwriter and piano player. Very talented and now at The Univ of Texas in Austin (Breanna Fye). If Breanna Fye keeps it up, you'll hear more from her in the future. Again, Special Thanks to all the following: Sponsors: Platinum - K-Star Country 99.7 (You can expect to hear COUNTY ROAD ZERO & 76 MILE Bands interviewed live on the Bobby Douglas show from 3-7pm very soon. Music played too!) Platinum - New Wave Promotion Gold - Sinkhole Productions Judges: Saturday Night: Justin Grant, Eddie Reeves, Theresa Reeves Sunday: Tish Meeks & Andrew Wood (3 Kisses), Edison Freeman (PineyWoods Studios) Special Guest Artists for Saturday - Halloween Night: Craig Squires (Space City Spaceman) performing - "Halloween Fright - X-Ray Eyes" Brenda Guy - Performing her classic Dance, Disco & Country music covers between bands. WoW! Andi Block - Closed the night with her country dance music (30 minute set) All Participating Bands: Not necessarily in order of finish except for 1st three winning places. 1st Place: County Road Zero - Cleveland, TX - Country 2nd Place: Liquidious - Woodlands, TX - Rock 3rd Place: Illysium - College Station, TX - Metal 76 Mile Band - Katy, TX - Red Dirt/TX Country Here's the Story Band - Conroe, TX - Indie Rock Kill Me Holly Band - Houston, TX - Rock Glenn Bryant Band - Houston, TX - Blues Rock Sou'Briety - Houston, TX - HipHop/Rap Damen Austin Band - Humble, TX - Rock/Blues/Retro Franklin Monroe - Bryan, TX - Acoustic Soloist Singer/SongWriter In conclusion, if there is any way I may be of assistance to your project, do not hesitate to ask. TBR Studios has a wide variety of services available. We are two experienced, pro musicians in our twenties. I am a guitarist who sings backup, and the other is a great drummer with disgusting (a good thing) groove.
What we're seeking is a vocalist (if you can play rhythm guitar, great. But it isn't a dealbreaker.) who has either has original songs waiting to be played, or is alright with doing covers. We also seek a bassist. We are in our 20's, and currently play for a well-known singer songwriter from Houston, looking to branch out. Those not looking to eventually play several gigs per weke need not apply. Thanks. • Location: Houston, USA

The "BATTLE for TEXAS" Update - Halloween Weekend!!!
"The BATTLE for TEXAS" HALLOWEEN Weekend - October 31st & November 1st Your Hosts: TBR Studios & Gilleys Roadhouse & Dancehall It has been 2 years since our last event held at Papa's Icehouse in Spring 2007. Time for another round! We are still gathering our sponsors as of this notice, although several are already on-line. We will begin announcing sponsors soon. This is notice to any bands/solo artists that may wish to participate. We plan to run this event on Halloween Weekend (Saturday & Sunday). It appears we may have 2 radio sponsors. I should be getting confirmation from both sometime this week. This may also include a live radio remote on site for band interviews. If you wish to participate in the competition, send a letter if intent ASAP: txbackroads@hotmail.com SUBJECT LINE: Battle for Texas It is filling up quickly, so don't delay your entry. The Format for the Event: SATURDAY NIGHT: Country Genres & HALLOWEEN PARTY All COUNTRY Music bands (Country, Texas Country, Americana) will play on Saturday afternoon/night. Usually Keith Gilleys "Urban Legends Band" plays every Friday & Saturday night. Keith Gilley is pre-empting his band Saturday night for the Country bands' competition. Saturday night is also a Halloween Party and, since it is a dancehall, all Country bands playing will be granted a full set of music (45min-1hour) so the night will be about dancing as well as competition. All non dance bands and solo acts will go first (earlier) so the country/dance oriented music is saved for later in the night as if it were a normal Saturday night dance at Gilleys. CAUTION: Just because you may be a solo/duo country act that may not lend itself to two-stepping, as far as judging is concerned, this does not affect your scoring in any way. This format is simply to accomodate the venue's Saturday night dancing format. This is another reason to allow cover music this year. Many enjoy dancing to music they know as well as originals. As of this notice there are already 3 country acts signed up. Sign up now...space is limited!!! SPECIAL GUESTS: Halloween Night - Saturday, Oct. 31st 1) Space City Spaceman - HALLOWEEN FRIGHT (X-Ray Eyes). This artist, Space City Spaceman, will be there live to perform this new release between sets. He may even allow you to purchase a copy fer yerself . His choice... You may listen to this cut on this page or my Houston Open Mic page: www.myspace.com/houstonopenmic - Click on Space City Spaceman's link in my Top friends to go to the Spaceman's Page. 2) Brenda Guy - Brenda has performed in all our Open Mic Venues and always brings down the house with her soulful performances of timeless classic dance & disco music along with some quality Rock-N-Roll as well. Brenda will be performing between band set-ups to keep the music and dancing going for 1 or more sets. Up for some Thelma Houston style disco and more? 3) Andi - Currently a female vocalist with the "Urban Legends Band", Andi will take at least one band break to keep the Country 2 Steppin' going on Saturday Night. I'm bettin Keith Gilley will join her for some Duets as well. www.myspace.com/houstonopenmic SUNDAY (All Day): All other Genres Sunday begins at NOON and is reserved for all acts other than country; Rock, Blues, R&B, Soul, Hip/Hop/Rap, Alternative, etc. We already have a couple of Soul/Hip?hop acts signed up so there should be plenty of dancin' on Sunday too!!! Yes, this is an "Original Music" Battle of the Bands with some; a) MAJOR DIFFERENCES from other "Battles" going on in Houston areas. Plus, b) one significant rule change from the last event. Read on to see if your band may wish to participate... Why the name; "The Battle for Texas"? The future intent of this project, even if it does not happen this year, is to bring this event to several major regions of Texas; Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, San Antonio, Corpus Christi & Austin. The winners of each region will converge to one city for the final Battle, although participation in the final battle event is not mandatory. It is OK just to be a regional winner. One Significant Rule Change from the last event: This is an ORIGINAL MUSIC competition. In the last event no cover music was allowed. This rule has changed for this event. For this competition, at least 50% of your music must be original and up to 50% may be cover music. Cover music will be graded on either: 1) Accuracy or 2) Originality and the ability to make it your own. 3) There is no penalty for NOT playing cover music but it may be used as a tie breaker if needed. There was no tie in the last 2007 event. MAJOR DIFFERENCES of this Competition vs. Others: 1) You are NOT required to sell tickets to secure your playing slot. 2) There is NO WINNER by APPLAUSE by the most fans present. By all means, bring your fans, but this is a talent competition, not a rowdy fan competition. 3) REAL Judges will be presiding over the competition. Judges are usually supplied by our sponsors. All judges operate under the exact same scoring rules provided to them for each band. Judges score you, hand it in to event officials, then move to the next band. This means you only need to be good at what you do, when you do it. Playing last is not a BIG advantage. 4) All bands know the exact criteria the judges use to score the competition before they arrive at the competition. 5) Judges watch band interaction with the crowd & crowd response, but the loudest applause by the most fans present is not what wins this competition. 6) In the last competition, the TOP 3 Winning places got LIVE INTERVIEWS on a Houston Radio Station and got to play live on the air or have CD Tracks played during the Live Interview. 7) This event begins Saturday Oct. 31st for all Country Bands. Sunday, Nov. 1st are all other Genres. No Quarter finals & Semi final rounds. All awards & prizes are announced and awarded Sunday night at the end of the competition. Last Competition Winners from 2007: 1st: Breanna Fye - Indie Singer/Songwriter - Lake Charles, LA 2nd: Skepticynic - Rock - Houston, TX 3rd: Drout Boyz - HipHop/Rap - Houston, TX Who may Compete? Is there a registration fee? Solo/Duo/Trio Acts to Full Bands. All genres are highly encouraged!!! No age limitations for bands (Venue is family friendly). Yes, the band registration fee is the same as the last event: $25.00. This is all that's required to enter other than the rules stated above. In conclusion, this is notice to all artists. You may submit your letter of intent to participate by replying to this notice. More details (prizes, etc.) will be given when sponsors are on-line and finalized. E-Mail entry request to: txbackroads@hotmail.com Subject Line: "Battle for Texas" Thanks, Luckee Michael Langran (aka: Luckee), President TBR Studios 18429 Hwy 105 Cleveland, TX 77328 281-659-6714 (cell) 281-432-2312 (Home) TBR Recording Studio & Band Rehearsal Center www.myspace.com/txbackroads Houston Open Mic Group www.myspace.com/houstonopenmic • Location: Gilleys Roadhouse

Special Guests for Halloween Night: As of this notice, we have 2 special Guests that will perform for the halloween party between acts while bands are breaking down and setting up for the next set. Gonna be a fun night. 3) Andi - A Female vocalist with the "Urban Legends Band" will take at least one band break set singing popular country dance music while bands are doing change-out for next set. SUNDAY (All Day): All other Genres Sunday begins at NOON and is reserved for all acts other than country; Rock, Blues, R&B, Soul, Hip/Hop/Rap, Alternative, etc.
